Is it necessary to offer Eid Prayer?

  • Sunnah Mu’akkadah ( موكدة ): According to Imām Mālik and Imām ash-Shāfiʿī, the Eid prayer falls under the category of Sunnah Mu’akkadah—an emphasized Sunnah. In other words, it is a praiseworthy and strongly recommended act (مستحبّ مؤكد), but not a binding obligation (غير واجب). Leaving it without a valid excuse is discouraged, yet it does not incur sin.
  • Fard al-Kifāyah ( فرض الكفاية ): Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal holds that Ṣalāt al-ʿĪd is a communal duty (واجب كفائي). If a sufficient number of believers attend and perform it, the collective responsibility is fulfilled; those who remain behind are exempt and bear no sin, provided the community’s obligation has been met.
  • Fard ʿAyn ( فرض العين ): Imām Abū Ḥanīfah—and some reports attributed to Imām Aḥmad—consider Eid prayer as an individual duty (فرض على كل مسلم ذكر). In this view, every male Muslim must perform it (لا سيما الرجال)، and neglecting it without a valid Sharʿī excuse is regarded as sinful (آثم). This perspective emphasizes the immense rewards (أجر عظيم و عمل صالح) that accompany joining the congregation on the morning of Eid.

Whatever belief one follows—whether framing it as Sunnah Mu’akkadah, Fard al-Kifāyah, or Fard ʿAyn—performing Ṣalāt al-ʿĪd is a tremendous source of barakah and spiritual uplift. It is a blessed occasion for expiation of sins and a means to accrue abundant hasanāt amid communal worship and celebration.

Rituals Before the Eid Prayer (Sunnah Acts)

  • Take a shower (Ghusl): A full body wash before praying is a Sunnah and helps you feel fresh and clean.
  • Eat something sweet: The Prophet (ﷺ) would eat dates before going out. If dates aren’t available, anything sweet is fine.
  • Dress well: Wear your cleanest and best clothes, and apply perfume (for men) to honor the occasion.
  • Recite the Takbīr: Say the Eid Takbeers (“Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illa Allāh…”) on your way to the prayer place.

How to offer the Eid Prayer

  • Intention (Niyyah): Silently intend to pray two rakʿahs of Eid prayer behind the Imam.
  • Start the prayer: Follow the Imam and say Allāhu Akbar (first takbeer), raising your hands.
  • Opening duʿāʾ: Quietly recite the opening supplication (e.g., Subḥānak Allāhumma…).
  • Three extra takbeers: The Imam will say three more takbeers—you say Allāhu Akbar and raise your hands each time.
  • Listen to Qur’an recitation: The Imam will recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and another short sūrah. Listen silently.
  • Complete the first rakʿah with rukūʿ and sujūd, following the Imam.
  • Second rakʿah: Stand for the second rakʿah. The Imam will again recite Sūrah al-Fātiḥah and another sūrah.
  • Three more takbeers: After the recitation, the Imam will say three more takbeers—repeat after him.
  • Finish the prayer: Continue with rukūʿ, sujūd, and end the prayer as usual with the taslīm (salām).
  • Khutbah (Sermon): After the prayer, remain seated and listen to the Imam’s short sermon. It is recommended, though not obligatory.
