Al Janoub Stadium Design and Structure
This Stadium was designed by Iraqi British architect Zaha Hadid and her architectural firm Zaha Hadid Architects. She was inspired by the sails of traditional Dhow boats and designed the exterior to resemble them. The retractable roof of the stadium resembles the current Persian Gulf. The structure gives viewers the feeling of stepping onto a majestic ship rather than a typical sports venue.

With beautifully bowed beams that show a ship’s sturdy hull, the structure not only captures the spirit of the past but also brings modern engineering to life. More than just a stage for world-class football, the stadium is designed as a welcoming community hub, ready to host everyday activities once its World Cup days are behind.
Facilities and Amenities at Al Waqra Stadium
The Stadium includes facilities like a multipurpose room with swimming pools, spas, and a shopping area with a green roof. The entrance is made of a wooden square.

Aside from these facilities, a school, a wedding hall, cycling, horse riding, running tracks, marketplaces, and gyms will be built in the neighborhood of the stadium.
Al Waqra Stadium Renovations
After the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Al Janoub Stadium will become the home ground for Al-Wakrah Sports Club. It will replace the Saoud bin Abdulrahman Stadium. The number of seats will be reduced from 40,000 to 20,000 to better suit regular league matches. The extra seats will be donated to developing countries that need sports facilities.
